Links of Interest – The Linking

Posted in Uncategorized on July 20th, 2006 by Notaninja

I’ve come across a few interesting items lately that I feel compelled to share. Here they are, in no particular order:

Yes.com – heard a song on the radio but you have no idea who it is? Well, this may give you the answer. They list radio stations across the US and their playlists for the past 24 hours. If the song is available on iTunes they link to it for your ease of purchase.

i use this – Have you ever been looking for a piece of software to do something, but aren’t sure what you should get, or what other people might be using? This site allows you to search for programs and shows how many people have marked it as something they use. Great to see what is not just good, but that many other people use. Currently only for Mac software but I hear they are planning to add other platforms as they finish up the code.

SoundSource – a great, free Mac program that adds (yet another) menu item for changing your sound settings. Great for switching between input/output sources quickly and easily. I love it on my laptop for switching between speaker and headphone usage. Check out Rogue Amoeba’s other stuff as well. They have some great free utilities.

Hmm… There was something else but it escapes me at the moment. Oh well, something for next time.
If I can remember what it was….

On the Smacking of Children

Now, I’m not against smacking a child when they deserve it, but this so-called Christian group in New Zealand may have taken it a bit far.

I do like the item stating “If the child is angry after the smack, you have not smacked hard enough”. It has a certain basic ring of truth to it. However, I think they really stepped over the line at “Smacking may be a 10-15 minute process”. I would think if you had done it correctly in the first place it shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes at the most.

Soccer or Football?

And no, this has nothing to do with the World Cup.

I’m browsing the newly available themes for the XBox 360 on XBox Live and what do I find but the Universal Football Fan 2006 section. Being an American I automatically assume they are gearing up for the NFL season already but instead find themes for the various National teams. And all of them are named in the pattern [Country] Football Theme except one. USA Soccer Theme.

I realize that the word football has a different meaning here in the US, but if you are truly a fan of the sport I think you would figure it out and not be confused, especially with all of the country themes listed above the USA theme. Or maybe the typical USA Football fan would buy this thinking it was truly US Football and not Rest of the World Football.

Okay, so maybe it does have something to do with the World Cup since that is likely fueling demand for all things soccer in the US and for all things football in the rest of the world.
